Investing in your Health

What to Expect When Working with a Naturopath

By the time you find yourself sitting across from a Naturopath, it’s likely you’ve been living with your symptoms for quite some time. You may have already explored other options in the hope of healing, often with limited or no success. This can be a frustrating and disheartening experience.

Choosing to work with a Naturopath is a significant step—a commitment to prioritising your health and wellbeing. It’s about taking the time to understand why your body has reached this current state, and how you can move through it towards a state of optimal health.

When a condition becomes chronic—defined as symptoms lasting longer than three months—it often requires a layered approach to begin reversing the imbalance. This includes a financial investment, such as consultation fees and the cost of supplements, as well as a willingness to implement meaningful changes in diet and lifestyle. Healing takes time, consistency, and effort.

Speaking from personal experience, I once struggled with frozen shoulder. I did everything I could on my own, but after four months without progress, I knew I needed more support. I began seeing a chiropractor three times a week—at a cost of around $200 weekly—and followed a targeted supplement plan that included magnesium, high-dose fish oils, and turmeric. I also removed sugar and the occasional glass of wine from my diet. Over time, the pain eased, and I began seeing results that kept me motivated. I’m now back at the gym lifting weights—something I couldn’t have imagined during the height of my symptoms. That investment in my health was, without a doubt, worth every cent.

While the cost of seeing a Naturopath may seem like an upfront expense, the long-term goal is to educate and empower you to take charge of your health. The aim is to reach a point where you no longer need consultations or ongoing supplementation.

Each client is provided with a personalised Treatment Plan. This includes health goals, diet and lifestyle recommendations, any relevant testing suggestions, and a supplement plan to support your body in healing. Importantly, it also explains the why behind each recommendation, so you understand the journey. You’ll also be given resources to support further learning and help you stay on track between visits.

Because transparency around cost is important, I’ve outlined below the typical structure of working with a Naturopath, to help you make an informed decision:

Consultation Costs:

  • Initial Consultation: $120

  • Follow-Up (approx. 3 weeks later): $50

  • Ongoing Consultations (typically every 6 weeks): $50

Supplement Costs:
Generally, 3–4 supplements are prescribed initially, costing around $250 for a 4-week supply.

So, over a typical 4-week period, the investment comes to roughly $105 per week, or about $15 per day.

As you progress, fewer supplements will likely be needed. A long-term maintenance plan may involve just one or two supplements at around $20-50 per week—until you reach a point where supplementation is no longer required.

Some clients are ready to dive in—motivated to make a change, tired of lingering symptoms, and prepared to invest in their future health. Others may need to start more gradually, which is entirely acceptable. Your Naturopath can work with your circumstances to create a plan that fits your capacity—whether that means starting strong or taking smaller, manageable steps.

There is a vast array of tools now available in functional medicine. Hormone testing, gut microbiome assessments, and food intolerance screenings can offer incredible insight and guidance for those dealing with long-term chronic health concerns.

Ultimately, the path to healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Whether you’re ready to begin in a big way or need to build up slowly, what matters is getting started. There is always a way forward, and your Naturopath will walk alongside you on the journey.
