Gluten Free Tips
My Story
I’ve been gluten free since 2009 after experiencing chronic IBS type symptoms as well as anxiety - the unexplainable body type anxiety that lingers with you and becomes a part of the day to day to manage. My Naturopath at the time suggested removing gluten and I felt so much better after only 1 week. So many other recurrent health complaints that I didn’t know were connected cleared up too. Each time I accidentally get ‘glutened’ my gut health and anxiety takes a set back and recovery takes me about a month to get back on track. Luckily I have an amazing toolkit of natural remedies and supplements to help me get back on track.
Eating Out
When you’re gluten free you need to be very careful eating out. Even if you’re not celiac it’s wise to tell the waiter that you are so that you know they’re taking great care for you in the kitchen. Many items on the menu labelled GF are cooked/fried with gluten containing foods, such as chips. I used to trust in the GF on the menu and then wonder what had caused me to be so unwell. It’s been a long time between contamination for me, and my gut and my health feel great.

A Note: The gluten free aisle of the supermarket isn’t always the healthiest, even though it may be labelled the health aisle. Make sure to read ingredient lists, and put it back on the shelf if it’s long and complicated with ingredients that you don’t understand. Many gluten free foods for example can contain maize/corn which can also be aggravating to the gut, as well as seed oils (canola, sunflower, vegetable oil) that are highly inflammatory and have a negative impact on the gut and the body overall.
